In the 2015–16 NCAA season, Derrick joined the UNLV Runnin’ Rebels as a freshman.

The NCAA Eligibility Center asked that the ACT examine test results reported by Jones and many other minority student-athletes at a specific testing facility in Baltimore, Maryland, prior to the season’s commencement.

Despite this, Derrick was approved by the NCAA before UNLV’s first game in November versus Cal Poly.
